Retractable Sample Probe Assemblies

Retractable sample probes that allow withdrawal under live process conditions via a packing-gland or ball-valve isolation. Use cases, mechanical design, and lockout requirements.

What "Retractable" Means

A retractable sample probe is mechanically designed to be withdrawn from the process line without depressurizing the line. The probe slides through a packing gland or behind a ball-valve isolation, allowing operators to clean, inspect, or replace the probe during normal production.

For the why-and-when discussion, see Retractable vs Fixed Sample Probes.

Two Mechanical Approaches

Packing-Gland Retraction

The probe slides through a high-pressure PG packing gland (typically PG3, PG4, or PG5 for higher pressures). The gland's compressed sealant maintains the pressure boundary as the probe moves. After full withdrawal, an isolation valve immediately downstream of the gland is closed.

Pressure limit: Set by the gland model. PG3 ~3000 psig, PG4 ~5000 psig, PG5 ~6000 psig.

Ball-Valve Isolation

The probe enters through a full-bore ball valve. To withdraw, the operator pulls the probe past the valve seat, then closes the valve. This approach handles higher pressures and abrasive media better than packing-gland retraction but requires a longer install envelope.

Pressure limit: Set by the valve. Class 600 to Class 2500 are common.

When to Specify Retractable

  • High-cycle-life applications where preventative cleaning is mandatory
  • Critical process units where unplanned shutdowns are unacceptable
  • Sour service where SCC inspection must be frequent
  • Pipeline custody transfer where audit access matters
  • Any installation where the probe is on a line that cannot be depressurized for maintenance

Lockout-Tagout Protocol

Retractable probes always require a documented LOTO procedure for safe removal:

1. Verify isolation valve is operational

2. Pull probe to retracted position

3. Close isolation valve

4. Verify zero pressure between gland and valve

5. Open the gland to remove the probe

6. Reverse for reinstall

Configure

Open the SPA Configurator, enable "retractable" in the design intent, and the wizard will surface the correct gland and valve options for the entered process pressure.
